From Salvador Dali to Andi Warhol, artists have influenced and shaped Punk in its origins. SBÄM also started with Stefan Beham’s designs of tour posters, album covers and merchandise for bands.
SBÄM Exhibit is an art exhibition within a Punk festival. It’s about art forms that have shaped Punk Rock beyond music. From street art to visual art, SBÄM Exhibit offers the festival audience the experience of art in their own Punk scene.
SBÄM Exhibit is curated by Stefan Beham himself. He’ll explore his roots as a visual artist and bring the most exciting artists from the Punk universe to the SBÄM Fest for an on-site exhibition – musicians, who are active in diverse art forms besides creating music, and artists, who shaped Punk Rock with their artistic work in any way.
Steve Caballero is one of the most prominent skateboard legends in the world. Like many other artists who have been linked to the skateboarding culture, his legendary place in skateboard industry, offers a historical commentary on life for his generation: a constant need to find goals and challenges, but always taking a serious path to get his work ethic done in a positive light. Steve derives a lot of imagery from cartoons, hotrod, motorcycle and pop culture – but he also combines and transcends these sources into something colorful, witty and pleasing to the eye. His daily sketches and ideas are the seedbed of his work from which all his other media generates.
“Besides Skateboarding as a creative outlet, I also use a brush and a pen to help create and design artwork and graphics for various companies within the skateboard and motocross industry. I also produce original paintings for art shows all over the world and offer reproduction artist prints for sale.”
Erik Ohlsson (Millencolin)
Erik Ohlsson is a Swedish artist but most known for being the guitar player of Millencolin. Art and skateboarding has been a huge part of Eriks life ever since he was a kid. Everything from pencil sketches to oil painting to grafitti. And nowadays mostly vector art in Illustrator and Photoshop.
Erik has made all the artwork, merchandise and pretty much everything visual for Millencolin since they formed the band back in 1992. The Millencolin bird which has been a trademark for Millencolin, was first drawn on the first demo tape back in 1993 and has been included somewhere in all album artwork ever since.
Erik started his own freelance company Eckhouse Design early 2000 and have made logos and graphics for companies mainly in the music, skateboarding and sport fishing industry.
At the SBÄM Exhibit Erik will display new posters of his album artwork for Millencolin based on the original art.
Jason DeVore (Authority Zero)
Jason Bradley DeVore is an American musician, singer songwriter, and artist who fronts long standing punk band Authority Zero. Through his life experiences via touring the globe he has absorbed the world’s chaos entwined with it’s beauty and had begun doodling it as a seen through his eyes.
When the 2020 pandemic hit, he began gathering his doodles and collecting his thoughts. Becoming highly inspired, he started to create in a more visually stimulating and thought provoking form. Combining elements of drawing, painting, photography, song lyrics, and imagery, his works contain a wide array of elements. Those of love, humanity, pain, suffering, faith, and woven throughout, the underlying beauty within it all. It has since taken on a life of its own and has sparked a newly rekindled flame as the driving force within his works. Using concepts and ideals drawn from his music and life perspective, he continues to transpose them into visual art and push the envelope.
Missfelidae (Lisa Arnberger)
Lizzy skillfully creates an often surreal world consisting of colors and shapes, lines and dots as well as illusions and illustrations with great attention to detail. Her huge love for nature and the fantastic shows itself in the floral and animal elements often found in her work. Besides creating artworks for international known bands like Nothing, Emma Ruth Rundle, Motorpsycho and others in a genre-appropriate manner, she has also been creating the lead sujets for Lake On Fire Festival or Krach am Bach or conjures up gig posters for locations such as Arena Wien, Stadtwerkstatt Linz, Viper Room, KAPU or other.
“For me, music has always been a huge part, almost like the air to breathe. Over the years, cassette recorder, Disc-Man and Ipod accompanied me through life. When I became active in a band myself (2007), one thing led to another and I started designing for bands.”
In 2018 she also caught attention of the international community: The advertising magazine Lürzers ’Archive published 9 of her works in the worldwide special edition of 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide.
A Place For Tom (Thomas Gasperlmair)
100 000 dots, a vintage touch, a faible for underground music and a lot of motivation to keep things growing – that’s what Tom’s work is all about.
Next to artworks for international bands from the stonerrock, punk, hardcore and metal circuit like Chelsea Wolfe, Elder, Russian Circle, Implore and austrian cult-locations like KAPU Linz and Arena Wien, Tom released his first book: The Raw Stuff, the definite national music artwork bible presenting the best music-artwork artists of austria – SBÄM included, certainly.
SBÄM (Stefan Beham)
Punk is not only Stefan Beham’s preferred music genre, but also his way of life! It’s about the freedom to do what you feel like doing and the courage to jump in at the deep end – which his art reflects on many levels. It all began in 2016, when he entered a tour poster design contest for Joey Cape, which he won, of course. Through this connection and his unique style, he soon started creating designs for the best-known punk label Fat Wreck Chords on a regular basis and many more of his heroes.
With a lot of passion and initiative the four letters SBÄM became a synonym for punk rock art worldwide on tour poster, album covers and merch … leading up to today, where the pop art punk has his own record label and a festival. His love for dirty punk rock will forever be his driving force and his inspiration, never forgetting why and how it all started.
